Method and limitations

List-price estimate, not a quote or architecture recommendation. Taxes, support, observability, credits, negotiated discounts, request geography, migration, operations labor, and account eligibility can materially change a production bill.

Model the full architecture

The decision behind the total

Capacity is predictable.
Delivery is the swing factor.

A workload can retain relatively little data and deliver those bytes thousands of times. That is why this model never estimates egress from stored capacity—and never hides a zero-dollar line.

Add compute and traffic shape

What is actually compared

One object workload.
Three pricing systems.

The scope stays narrow enough that every number can be followed to a published meter. This is a list-price comparison, not an architecture recommendation disguised as arithmetic.

01 / capacity

Storage held

Average decimal GB-month maps to R2 Standard, S3 Standard in us-east-1, and Cloud Storage Standard in us-central1.

02 / operations

Reads and writes

GET-like reads and PUT/list-like writes remain separate and use each provider's published request classes and allowances.

03 / transfer

Internet delivery

R2's $0 egress stays explicit. AWS and Google use documented public-transfer tiers without an invented CDN cache ratio.

Included

  • Standard storage capacity
  • Read and write operations
  • Direct public delivery
  • Recurring published allowances

Not invented

  • CloudFront or Cloud CDN hit ratio
  • Lifecycle and replication behavior
  • Infrequent-access retrieval patterns
  • Credits and negotiated discounts

R2 vs S3 calculator FAQ

The live bill links every rate and methodology rule. These answers explain the assumptions around it.

01 Does Cloudflare R2 charge for internet egress?

R2 does not charge an internet egress fee. Storage capacity and Class A/Class B operation charges still apply, so the calculator keeps the zero-dollar transfer line and its real quantity visible.

02 Does the S3 result include CloudFront?

No. It models direct public delivery from S3 using AWS internet data-transfer tiers. CloudFront needs an honest cache-hit and geography assumption, so this focused calculator does not invent one.

03 How are free allowances handled?

Greenfield mode applies recurring published account allowances. Marginal mode assumes those shared allowances are already consumed by other workloads. Promotional credits are excluded.

04 Why include Google Cloud Storage?

A third provider helps show whether a result is driven by storage, operations, or public transfer rather than turning the page into a two-vendor claim.
